Dresden Baroque District, New King’s Town of August the Strong

A great fire on 6th August 1685 destroyed one of the cradles of Dresden, Altendresden (Olden Dresden) on the right bank of the Elbe. The fire started in a cabinetmaker’s workshop and destroyed about 370 houses (of a total of 400). Life in that part of town slackened and was in danger of never coming back. Ten years later very few of the destroyed buildings had been re-erected. But with the beginning of the rule of August the Strong (1670 – 1733) 1694, Christoph August von Wackerbarth (1662 - 1734) was commissioned to construct a “New King’s Town” according to latest findings of urban development at that time.

Dresden cultural metropolis with Latin charm

Dresden is one of the hottest cultural metropolises in the world! The visitors not only praise its in-stone-carved centuries-old history, its world-class art collections, its Latin charm, its highly noticed stage productions, and last but not least its world-renowned Christmas stollen - but also its attractive location. Diverse landscapes such as the bizarre world of rocks of the Elbsandsteingebirge (also called Saxon Switzerland), the Erzgebirge and one of the northernmost wine-growing region in Europe surround the city like a noble setting of a precious pearl. The wide band of the river Elbe runs through the city and invites to a trip aboard an ancient paddle steamer. It is worth visiting Dresden at any season of the year. Live in one of our guest apartments in the heart of Dresden! Experience the classical beauty, but also discover the new, vibrant face of this unique city!
