Dresden Theater and Stages

Dresden as a cultural metropolis offers plenty of entertainment on the stages of the city. Crown your evening with a theatrical performance or a ballet production, laugh about comedians or go to the frivolous-humorous Travestieshow. What ever you like, you will find your special highlight by night on your way through this colorful town.

Semper Opera House

It is one of the most beautiful opera houses of the world! The Semper Opera Ball/Dresden Opera Ball (Semperopernball) takes place for just two years but is nothing short of the Vienna Opera Ball. After the first Semper Opera House had been destroyed by a fire, the second building arose between 1871 and 1878. Destroyed again in the bombing of February 1945 the house was opened in present shape 40 years later with the opera “The Marksman”/“The Freeshooter” (“Der Freischütz”) by Carl Maria von Weber (1786 – 1826). The Dresden Ballet, the Chorus of the State Opera House, and the world famous Saxon State Orchestra Dresden have their place of activity here. Sightseeing is offered nearly everyday.

Dresden State Operetta

The Dresden State Operetta is one of the few light musical theaters in Europe.

The theater is unique for cultivating the legacy of Johann Strauss - apart from “Vienna Blood”, two virtually forgotten works by the Waltz King can be found in its repertoire: the melody-rich “Roman Carneval”, an extraordinary success now entering its third season at the State Operetta, and as of April 2007 “The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief”.
